I slathered on a layer of sunscreen and slipped behind the wheel. The golf cart beeped as I reversed out of the carport. Lorelai slid in her basket, producing an irritated hiss from her seat companion.

“I wonder if they’ll ever get along.” Lois eyed the animals. “Shouldn’t we be through the adjustment period?”

“As much as she pretends otherwise, Kitka is still a cat. She can’t admit she’s best friends with a dog.”

We arrived at the barn a few minutes later. An irritated group of guests waited at a picnic table. I stumbled out of the cart with a clipboard tucked under my arm. “Are you the folks with Uncle Vandy’s Snack Company?”

A woman with dark brown hair and eyes to match stepped forward. “Yes, I’m Vandy Volkov.”

I checked my list. “Oh, the CEO. You’re the first one up.” My gaze traveled across the others. “We’ll be transporting you to your tents so you can settle into your new digs. After which, there is a full day of activities planned.”

“Yippie.” The young guy’s words didn’t match his sarcastic tone.

I cleared my throat and slipped into my practiced spiel. “This section of the resort is brand new so I hope you can excuse us as we work through some of the kinks. First off, how many of you know what glamping is?”

“I do.” A Hispanic woman wearing designer gear raised her hand. “I go all the time. My sorority sisters and I booked a reunion weekend in Pagosa Springs which was the best. You guys are going to totally love it.”

I scanned the less convinced expressions on the other four faces. “For the rest of you, glamping is simply glamorous camping. You still enjoy the outdoor experience of a tent but in a more luxurious way.”

The young woman with a toothy smile bounced on her toes. “Sounds fancy.”

Brawny Paper Towel Man crossed his arms. “Sounds expensive.”

I filed away their reactions for later when I knew more about their personalities. And possibly their names. Why didn’t I request a dossier of the employees before leaving the office?

My eyes cut to the notes on my clipboard. “So, without further ado, we’ll begin transporting you to your tents. Additional golf carts will be here shortly and your concierge can answer all your glamping-related questions.”

“I’ll take your bags.” Lois grabbed Vandy’s suitcase and straddled it in the back row of the golf cart.

Vandy clutched the handrail and plopped in the passenger’s seat. She crossed her arms and adjusted her oversized sunglasses. She remained silent and reflective as we took off down the trail. “Do you two work for Ricardo?”

“I’m Becky Robinson and she’s Lois Vo.” I paused at an intersection to consult the map. “We are excited to work with you.”

“Why isn’t your boss here? I thought I made my concerns clear.”

“He didn’t tell you to expect us?” I exchanged a glance with Lois. The guy was entranced by the Sunlight Swindler and everything took a backseat. Including updating clients on the change of plans.
